I also attended the meetings and helped in decisions concerning the business of running a fire station. I did this until my wife died. I then moved out of the fire district. On my last meeting night I turned in my running gear and radio. I handed the chief my badge and identification as a member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. During the meeting, I was amazed and deeply of the company. I cannot put into words the pride and other emotions I felt at this honor. The feeling was very much the same as when after five years at the University of Maryland I walked across the stage and received my diploma.” Don continues to write about his time in the volunteer fire service as well as his life experiences dealing with an artificial leg.
