Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: Long Neck Rd and Blue Mist, 19966

On Friday evening, October 23rd, the Indian River (80) and Lewes (82) fire companies were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on Long Neck Road in the area of Blue Mist Drive.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Delaware State Police – Aviation Unit – Trooper 2 as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. It was reported to be a two-vehicle accident upgraded to include entrapment.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Squad 80 and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility.  Additional resources were requested from DELDOT Traffic Management Center for sand and sweeper truck.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization, fluid and debris recovery, preparation for landing zone, traffic control and overall incident mitigation services. The additional rescue assist units were cancelled once no entrapment was confirmed.

It appears that a white Jeep Compass and a bronze Hyundai Tucson collided head-on on Long Neck Road causing injury and damage.  There were two persons transported for additional hospital services – one flown to Christiana Hospital and one transported by ground EMS units.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT) was requested to the incident location for additional services with sand and a street sweeper.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the closure of Long Neck Road during the initial mitigation efforts and then traffic lane restrictions thereafter for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
