Nature:  School Bus Safety Message for Motorists

Location: Indian River Fire District

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hereby offers this school bus safety message to motorists within the Indian River Fire District.  As children head back to school in September, motorists must always stop for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms.

Essential Safety Rules for Drivers

  • Yellow Lights Mean Slow Down: “Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children.”  Slow down and get ready to stop.

  • Red Lights Mean STOP: “Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off.” - You must remain stopped until the red lights turn off and the stop arm retracts.

  • Watch the Danger Zone: “the 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children.” Give children plenty of space to cross safely.

  • Eliminate Distractions: Put your phone away and stay alert in residential neighborhoods.
