Nature: Water Rescue Priority 1
Location: 36624 Long Neck Rd , 19966
On Monday evening, September 7th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83) and Dagsboro (73) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a water rescue incident in the Indian River Bay. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit 2, and the DNREC – Marine Police. It was reported to a male subject on a lime green and black jet ski lost and unable to return.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Chief 80, Rescue 80 and Utility 80-8 and 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Utility 80-11 with 80 Marine 2 and Squad 80 responding to the Massey’s Landing Boat Ramp.
Emergency response crew assignments were to prepare for launch and coordinate a search in the area of Highview looking for a jet ski (lime green and black) with one occupant lost and cannot find way back as the darkness of night fell. The mariner was occupied with two-way radio. The mariner was wearing a black and blue life vest.
It appears that the mariner and jet ski launched from the Massey’s Landing Boat Ramp and became disoriented with his location after the sunset and could not successfully navigate back to the boat ramp.
Emergency response units were able to locate and make contact with the mariner transporting him back to the boat ramp.
All emergency response units were authorized to clear and return to their respective quarters.
