FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet recognizes Stephen Smyk. 

This week, we're proud to feature another member whose life has been dedicated to serving others:

Stephen H. Smyk – Retired Fire Police Lieutenant

Originally from Millsboro, Delaware

16 years with Station 80

Why he joined:

“Public service. Returning something to our community.”

Inspired by:

Our President, Patrick Miller.

What he enjoys most:

“Community service and the camaraderie between the members.”

What people might not realize:

“The dedication and training involved.”

Most memorable calls:

Rather than one single incident, Steve says the calls he remembers most are the many opportunities he has had to help others throughout his years of service.

Outside the firehouse:

Steve is a retired Delaware State Trooper whose career has been built around protecting and serving the people of Delaware.

Off-duty:

He enjoys spending time fishing.

Holly Lake Restaurant

Favorite sports teams:

Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens, and Salesianum Football

Fun Facts:

• First job: Bagger at A&P Grocery Store

Why it matters:

“It's a debt we should try to pay back for all we have received over the years.”

Why volunteer?

“It provides self-esteem and self-satisfaction while giving back to your community.”

His advice:

“If you have the time, talk to the firefighters at our stations. Understand that volunteering is a commitment—but it's one worth making.”

Steve has faithfully served the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company since joining in 2011. During that time, he has served as a Fire Police Officer, Assistant Treasurer, and a trusted advisor on the department's Finance Committee. Combined with his distinguished career as a Delaware State Trooper, Steve has devoted decades of his life to public service, always placing the needs of others before his own. His steady leadership, financial stewardship, and unwavering commitment continue to strengthen Station 80 both on and off the emergency scene.
