Nature: Training & Drill Evolutions - Vertical Ventilation Tactics

On Wednesday evening, July 29^th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company held its monthly training and drill evolutions for firefighter development and honing of their knowledge, skills and abilities.  These training evolutions were conducted by Career Firefighter Matt Jenson who is also an Officer with the Millsboro Fire Company.

The subject matter was vertical ventilation which has been a core firefighting tactic for over a century, evolving from early door-and-window sealing to modern, coordinated smoke and gas removal strategies. Its development reflects changes in fire science, building construction, and training methodologies.

Vertical ventilation is typically an offensive tactic when firefighters cut or punch holes in roofs or walls to create exhaust ports, improving visibility and safety while allowing hot gases to escape.

Firefighters worked from the bucket and also simulation of a ground ladder. Indian River utilized our newly constructed prop using smoke simulation under it for a realistic atmosphere.
