FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet

This week, we’re proud to feature another dedicated leader and long-time member of Station 80:

  • ??‍?? Joseph Thompson III – Vice President

  • ?? Sussex County, Delaware

  • ? Serving with Station 80 since 1998 — 28 years

?? Why he joined:

“I wanted to help my community and help others in need.”

??‍?? Inspired by:

His best friend, Bruce Harmon.

?? What he enjoys most:

“The profound sense of community impact and the unbreakable camaraderie. Providing tangible, life-saving help to others exactly when they are experiencing their worst day.”

?? What people might not realize:

“The mental stress.”

?? Most memorable call:

Responding to his first fatal structure fire and later learning that family members were involved — a moment that left a lasting impact on him.

?? Outside the firehouse:

Joseph works as a Plumbing Service Manager.

? Off-duty:

He enjoys spending time with family, golfing, going to the gym, and fishing.

?? Favorite local spots:

Dunkin, Texas Roadhouse, and the beach.

?? Favorite sports team:

Dallas Cowboys

?? Fun Facts:

• First job: Dishwasher at Friendly’s Ice Cream

• Favorite TV shows: Fire Country & 911

• Go-to station snack: Cookies and cake

• Favorite artist: Garth Brooks

?? Why it matters:

“Being a reliable lifeline during someone's most critical moments.”

?? Why volunteer?

“It allows you to develop new skills like leadership, taking ownership, connecting with others in the fire service, and giving back to the community.”

?? His advice:

“It’s a life-changing commitment. The training is free, it can be tough, but it’s rewarding when you can help someone you don’t even know.”

Over the years, Joseph has held numerous leadership positions including Captain, Rescue Captain, Lieutenant, Vice President, DVFA Delegate, and Alternate Delegate. He currently serves on the Finance Oversight and Scholarship Committees and has also represented Indian River as President of both the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Sussex County Fire Chiefs Association.

Joseph’s dedication, leadership, and mentorship within the volunteer fire service have earned him the Henry C. Warrington Award, Firefighter of the Year honors, and Life Membership with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. Throughout his tenure, he has remained an instrumental asset to Station 80 and the surrounding community.

?? Thank you, Joseph, for your years of leadership, mentorship, and dedicated service to Station 80 and our community!
