Firefighters respond to fire at Dewey townhome

No one injured in blaze

Publication by:  Ellen McIntyre - May 19, 2026

Several local fire companies responded to a fire at a townhome on Bellevue Street in Dewey Beach the morning of May 19.

The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched at 8:32 a.m. to respond to the blaze at 4 Bellevue St., Unit 7. Dewey police officers were the first to arrive at the scene, finding smoke and flames coming from the third floor and roof line of the unit.

According to RBVFC incident commander and Deputy Chief Kent Swarts, no one was injured, nor was anyone home in the third-floor unit where the fire started or in the unit next door.

All occupants were out of the building.

It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control, Swarts said. As of about 10 a.m., the firefighters were doing overhaul, searching for and extinguishing smaller flames and embers to prevent the fire from restarting.

Due to the heat, several mutual aid companies assisted, including the Lewes Fire Department, Bethany Beach Fire Company, Indian River Fire Company, Millville Fire Company, Milton Fire Department and Sussex County EMS.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
