On Sunday morning, May 17th, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82) and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a residential structure fire on River Breeze Drive in the River Breeze development off Bay Farm Road. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. It was reported to be a working incident with fire on the deck extending into the residence.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine 80 and Brush 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Other mutual aid included the Dagsboro (73) to the incident location and Milton (85) to provide a stand-by cover up assignment.
Emergency response crew assignments included an initial 360 exterior evaluation with status reports included fire showing on side “C” with nearby propane tanks, requested to initiate fire suppress lines from first arriving unit which included two 1¾” lines with additional units supplying water and manpower, two additional 1¾’ fire suppression lines were activated from Tanker 80 with crews working both interior and exterior fire suppression assignments, ventilation was requested, and discontinuation of utility services (electric and water) were coordinated . A nearby hydrant (Bay Farm & River Breeze Roads) was utilized for water shuttle supply.
It appears that a fire originated near the rear of the structure causing significant damage throughout most of the residential structure. Crews worked diligently to suppress the spread of the fire. All family members and canine occupants were accounted for.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
There were not firefighter or civilian injuries.
