Nature: Trailer Fire
Location: 26228 School Lane Millsboro, DE 19966
On Saturday morning, April 18th, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), and Millsboro (83) fire companies were alerted for a residential structure fire on School Lane in the Long Neck area. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics as well as the Dagsboro (73) fire company. Other mutual aid companies were alerted for standby cover up assignments which included but not limited to Frankford (76), Georgetown (77), Milton (85) and Selbyville (88) fire companies. It was reported to be a building and structure fire at the location by nearby neighbors which heard a boom and can see fire. Additional information identified people running behind the structure and uncertain if the structures were occupied; however, believed to be abandoned.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Chief 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Brush 80 from the Long Neck area which was on a specific detail, Rescue 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as Traffic Control 80.
Emergency response crew assignments included accessing the hydrant at Bay Farm Road and School Lane with 5” large diameter hose, an initial 360 evaluation yield multiple structures (two residential manufactured homes, two car garage structure, shed, marine unit, boat trailer, utility trailers, lawn mower, debris including tires, fencing, etc. Other assignments included initiating fire suppression lines, establishing water supply, commencing with exposure protection measures as well as mitigation of the bleved propane tanks which fueled the flames, and closure of School Lane to all motor vehicle traffic.
It appears that neighbors heard a boom from the area of an abandoned residential manufactured home and could see fire. Additional incoming reports indicated that the manufactured home was fully involved and based upon the header in the air, the incident synopsis were accurate.
The Delaware State Fire Police assisted with traffic control and perimeter access for the duration of the incident. School Lane was closed to all traffic and traffic patterns on Bay Farm Road were altered based upon hydrant access measures.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
There were no firefighter injuries at this incident location.
