Indian River Kicks Off - Phase 2 Capital Campaign Initiative
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company has initiated Phase 2 of their Capital Campaign Initiative, which runs through the Spring / Summer of 2025. This initiative aims to secure capital funding to acquire necessary apparatus and equipment which has been delivered and is operational as well as its facility construction and renovation which will be complete in mid spring 2026 to support the essential services demanded by the community.
Indian River is currently renovating and constructing a new fire station to replace the outdated Long Neck facility, which dates back to 1972. This facility is crucial for enhancing the fire department's ability to respond to emergencies more quickly and safely. Indian River has entered a critical stage with its campaign and this project is essential to meet a record-breaking demand for emergency services, which saw a 28% increase in call volume in 2025.
Project & Funding Status
As of March 2026, the construction is nearing completion, though the department continues to seek community support to cover the remaining costs.
-
Total Project Cost: Approximately $4 million ($3.5 million for the facility and $477,000 for sitework).
-
Fundraising Progress: The community has raised over $200,000 for the building campaign since 2025.
-
Funding Strategy: Because the IRVFC is a 100% volunteer organization and does not receive local taxes or municipal support, it relies on company reserves, construction mortgages, and community donations.
-
Completion Timeline: Construction is expected to be finished by April 2026, slightly adjusted from earlier January estimates due to weather delays.
Facility Improvements
The expanded 16,000-square-foot facility replaces an outdated 1972 structure and includes:
-
Four new drive-through apparatus bays to accommodate modern, larger ladder trucks.
-
Enhanced living and training spaces, including bunk rooms, a meeting room, a training room, and an upgraded kitchen.
-
Improved response times by strategically placing equipment closer to high-growth areas in Long Neck.
How to Support
The IRVFC is asking for immediate financial support to finalize this expansion and ensure the department is prepared for future growth.
-
Donate Online: Contributions can be made through the IRVFC Online Donation Page.
-
Volunteer: The company is also seeking new volunteers for both fire service and its Auxiliary.
