Nature: Firefighter James “Jimmy” McLane Awarded Firefighter Black Shield

Location: Oak Orchard – Station #1

Address:  32628 Oak Orchard Road, Millsboro DE  19966

On Wednesday, March 4th, Chief Steven Deery of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company awarded Firefighter Jimmy McLane his firefighter black frontal shield for completion of his rigorous fire service training in accordance to the policy and procedures of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

In the fire service, being awarded a black frontal shield (or "black shield") is a significant milestone that signifies the completion of a probationary period and the transition to a full, permanent firefighter.

Key details about this tradition include:

  • Significance: It symbolizes that the firefighter has completed required training, proven their skills, and is considered "battle ready" by their peers and officers.

  • The Transition: New firefighters (recruits) often wear a yellow or orange helmet shield during their probationary year. After roughly 12 months of service, they are awarded the black shield in a "red-to-black" or "yellow-to-black" ceremony.

  • Symbolism: It represents the culmination of hard work, training, and acceptance into the firefighting team.

Chief Deery and Deputy Chief Mock presented Jimmy McLane his frontal shield in the presence of his father – Mickey McLane.
