On Wednesday, February 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad were alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway near the sharp curves.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics. It was reported to be a single vehicle had struck a utility pole and then into a tree.  The utility pole was down with live wires across the roadway.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews were requested to assist with patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization, fluid and debris recovery, traffic control and over incident mitigation.

It appears that a Dodge Caravan type vehicle was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and left the roadway, struck a utility pole and into a tree.  The utility pole and primary electrical wires were down and across the roadway.  There was an additional vehicle off the opposite side of the roadway which was attempting to evade the downed wires and become struck in a private residence front yard.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway between Warwick Road and Gull Point Road for the duration of the incident. The Delaware Department of Transportation were requested to the scene with directional traffic boards to assist with traffic.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
