Nature: Automatic Crash Notification – Long Neck Road

Location: Long Neck Rd and Kathys Way Millsboro, DE 19966

On Sunday, February 8th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad were alerted for an automatic crash notification on Long Neck Road in the area of Kathy’s Way. This incident was reported based upon an iPhone activation.

Emergency response apparatus from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crews responded to the area and did not identify any actual vehicle collision but found an iPhone on the shoulder of the roadway.  All other emergency response apparatus were cancelled and returned to their respective stations.

After evaluation, Squad 80 was able to retrieve the device and properly notified the emergency operations center of the disposition of the incident.

This incident was closed.

The automatic crash notification feature detects severe car crashes and can automatically connect you to emergency services, potentially saving your life.

How Crash Detection Works

The Crash Detection feature is designed to detect severe car crashes, including front-impact, side-impact, rear-end collisions, and rollovers. When a crash is detected, the following occurs:

  • Alert Activation: Your sounds an alarm and displays an alert for 10 seconds. If you are responsive, you can choose to call emergency services or dismiss the alert.

  • Automatic Emergency Call: If you do not respond within 20 seconds, your iPhone will automatically call emergency services. An automated voice message will inform them that you have been in a severe crash and provide your location coordinates.

  • Emergency Contacts Notification: If you have set up emergency contacts, your iPhone will send them a message with your location after the crash is detected.

  • Medical ID Access: If you have configured a Medical ID, emergency responders can access your medical information directly from your device.
