Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Medics

Location: John J Williams Hwy and Sandpiper Dr Millsboro, DE 19966

Notes:  Pole and Wires Down

 

On Tuesday morning, July 15th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the area of Sandpiper Drive and the Brandywood development.  Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. It was reported to single vehicle stiking and snapping the utility  pole with wires and pole blocking the travel lanes of John J. Williams Highway.  Additionally, a second vehicle traveling on John J. Williams Highway attempted to the avoid the downed pole and wires suffering minor damage as it ran into a wooded section off the shoulder of the roadway.

Emergency response apparatus from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Long Neck facility and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient assessment and stabilizaiton if needed, vehicle stabilization where needed, traffic control, notification of utility service provider – Delaware Electric Cooperative and the Delaware Department of Transportation – Traffic Management Section for arrow boards.

It apears that a white BMW was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and struck a utility pole causing it to snap and fall into the roadway blocking all travel lanes. An additional vehicle attempted to avoid the fallen debris and ran off the roadway into the wooded area. The utility service provider was notified to pursue corrective action. 

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the traffic control assignment with the closure of John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident.  DELDOT – Traffic Management Section was notified to provide arrowboard to assist with the traffic concerns during the road closure exercise.  The utility service provider remained on-scene to secure the utility pole replacement.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
