Nature:  Stop the Bleed Proclamation

Pursuant to a recent proclamation, the Honorable John Carney, Governor and Bethany Hall-Long, Lieutenant Governor have proclaimed Thursday, May 23rd - Stop the Bleed Day in Delaware.

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call to action. The Stop the Bleed campaign, based on U.S. military success in reducing combat fatalities, launched by the White House in October 2015, is aimed at decreasing preventable deaths through bleeding control

To Stop the Bleed, you should:

  1. Call 911 if the bleeding is severe or does not stop.

  2. Apply pressure with your hands or gauze on the wound. Hold pressure for at least 5 minutes before checking the wound.

  3. Raise the affected area above the heart level to reduce blood flow.

  4. Apply a tourniquet if the bleeding is from an arm or leg and cannot be controlled by pressure.

In February, 2024, many of the first responders from the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company pursued Stop the Bleed Training as part of its regular monthly training requirements..
