Nature: Vehicle Accident Serious

On Wednesday morning, July 8th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident – car reported into the water – in the Rehoboth Shores development with unknown status of time in water or occupancy within the vehicle. It was reported from Bay Breeze Lane; however, the exact location may be different.

Indian River requested the assistance from the Millsboro (83) and Millville (84) dive teams. The DNREC Marine Police, the Delaware State Police, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Millsboro Emergency Medical Services, and the Delaware State Fire Police were also alerted.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80, Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-1 and Brush #80-0 with 80 Marine 2 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crews were assigned to launch the marine units – 80 Marine 1 from Massey’s Landing and 80 Marine 2 from Rehoboth Shores – and respond to the incident location; responding crews on land were assigned to don cold water suits, teether off and attempt to access the vehicle within the canal pending arrival of certified divers.

It appears that a dark green Ford Explorer was directed in the water during higher than normal tides. The vehicle was not discovered until the outgoing tide had commenced.

During the initial search, the vehicle was believed to be unoccupied pending verification. It was verified as unoccupied and the efforts to commence with the extrication of the vehicles was orchestrated.

Bunting's Garage of Dagsboro, utilizing a heavy duty rotator, and divers coordinated these efforts. The rotator truck hoisted the vehicle from the waterway. All units were returned to quarters.

The Delaware State Police and the DNREC Marine Police are investigating.
