FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet Recognizes Ryan Mock

This week, we’re proud to feature another dedicated leader and long-time member of Station 80:

?????Ryan Mock – Deputy Chief

??Born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Delaware

?Serving with Station 80 for 26 years

??Why he joined:

“It started as a childhood dream, but it’s something I’ve taken seriously over time. I’m drawn to firefighting because it’s a way to serve others, work in a strong team environment, and stay calm under pressure when people need help the most.”

?????Inspired by:

A fellow firefighter, Tom Hirleman, who handed Ryan an application after hearing he was thinking about joining.

??What he enjoys most:

“The friendships I have gained over the years. Some of the greatest people I know I have met through the fire service.”

And, as Ryan would add, “cutting cars!” Vehicle rescue and the fast-paced problem solving involved with extrication have always been among his favorite parts of the job.

??What people might not realize:

“One thing people might not realize about being a volunteer firefighter is the amount of time and dedication involved. Volunteers balance training, emergency calls, meetings, and community events while also managing their regular jobs and family responsibilities.”

??Most memorable call:

Many years ago, Ryan responded in the command unit for what was dispatched as a service call involving a child with a teapot stuck on their head. Thinking he must have heard the dispatch wrong, he arrived to find exactly that—a child calmly eating a popsicle with a plastic Disney teapot stuck on her head. It's a call he still laughs about today.

??Outside the firehouse:

Ryan serves as a Shift Supervisor at Sussex County 911 and also operates his own lawn irrigation business.

??Favorite department event:

The department breakfasts—helping out, spending time with fellow members, and of course, enjoying the food.

??Fun Facts:

• First job: Holly Lake Campsites

• Favorite artist: Metallica

??Why it matters:

“Serving this community as a firefighter means being someone people can rely on during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. It's about protecting lives and property, building trust through professionalism, compassion, and service, and making a positive difference every day.”

??Why volunteer?

“You gain valuable skills, build lifelong friendships, and become part of a team that serves others when they need help most. The sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from helping your neighbors is something that's hard to find anywhere else.”

??His advice:

“Joining a volunteer fire department is one of the most rewarding things you can do. You don't need experience—the department will provide training and support. It requires commitment and hard work, but the pride that comes from serving your community makes it well worth it.”

Over his 26 years of service, Ryan has held numerous leadership positions including Chief, Deputy Chief, 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, and Lieutenant. He has also served on countless committees and special assignments, helping guide the department's operations and future growth.

Ryan's dedication to the fire service has been recognized through numerous honors, including the Phoenix Award, Hurst Jaws of Life Green Cross Award, Incident Top Responder (multiple years), Firefighter of the Year, and the Henry C. Warrington Award. In May 2026, Ryan reached his 26-year service milestone, and his volunteerism continues to be instrumental to the success of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

??Thank you, Ryan, for your leadership, dedication, and 26 years of service to Station 80 and our community!
