Nature: Community Risk Reduction – Neighborhood Canvas Event – River Breeze

On Friday, May 29th, a cohort of the Fire Prevention Team from the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company coordinated a Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Campaign by canvassing a specific neighborhood, distributing smoke detectors, and educating residents to reduce fire risk and enhance public safety.  The focus of the recent effort was in the River Breeze development off Bay Farm Road.

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is a proactive, data-driven approach that helps communities identify, prioritize, and address local safety risks before they cause harm. Instead of reacting to emergencies, CRR focuses on prevention by using tools like Community Risk Assessments (CRAs) to understand hazards such as fires, falls, flooding, or crime, and then implementing targeted interventions.

  • Education – Teaching residents about risks and how to prevent them (e.g., fire safety, fall prevention)

  • Engagement – Working with community members, organizations, and leaders to build partnerships and shared goals.

  • Engineering – Making physical changes to reduce risk (e.g., distributing and installing smoke detectors, testing existing smoke detectors)

Neighborhood canvassing is a method used within CRR and other community safety programs. It involves coordinated, door-to-door or public-space outreach to talk to residents, share safety information, listen to concerns, and build trust. Canvassing is especially effective and CRR is a strategic, prevention-focused process for reducing community risks, and neighborhood canvassing is a hands-on outreach tool that helps deliver education, build trust, and mobilize residents to make their neighborhoods safer.

In total 7 smoke alarms were delivered and appointments for 5 evaluations and information requests with 18 residential properties being contacted.
