FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet

• ??‍?? Jarrett Burger – Firefighter

• ?? Originally from Millsboro, Delaware

?? Why he joined:

“From a young age, I knew I wanted to serve as a firefighter.”

?? What he enjoys most:

“What I enjoy most about volunteering is being able to make a difference for people during some of the toughest moments they face.”

?? What people might not realize:

“Being a firefighter is less about fighting fires and more about handling everyday emergencies and carrying what you see long after the call ends.”

?? Most memorable call:

“Soon after I joined, we responded to a medical call, and that’s when it became real to me — these situations happen every day, and being prepared isn’t optional.”

?? Outside the firehouse:

Jarrett serves as a Field Technician for Sussex County Government, specializing in the locating and inspection of underground utilities.

? Off-duty:

Outside the firehouse, he enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, playing golf, and staying active with a variety of other interests.

?? Favorite teams:

A Philadelphia sports fan through and through.

?? Fun Facts:

• First job: Seasonal Officer with DNREC

• Favorite movie: Soul

• Go-to snack: Anything made by the Ladies Auxiliary

“To me, it means showing up when it matters most and making a difference when people need help the most.”

?? Why volunteer?

“People should consider volunteering because it allows you to help others when they need it most and be part of something bigger than yourself.”

?? His advice:

“I’d tell them to give it a shot. You never know the impact you can make until you’re in it.”
