Nature: Community Risk Reduction Canvas
Targeted Location: Sherwood Forest, Pot Nets Lakeside, et. al
On Saturday, May 2nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company actively coordinated a Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Campaign by canvassing specific neighborhoods, distributing smoke detectors, and educating residents to reduce fire risk and enhance public safety.
Community Risk Reduction (CRR) campaigns in Long Neck — like in other communities — aim to identify local hazards, prioritize them, and implement coordinated strategies to reduce their occurrence. These programs are especially valuable in rural or small-town settings where resources may be limited and fire suppression responses may be impacted.
Key CRR Canvas Efforts:
Neighborhood Canvassing: Involves a coordinated effort to conduct a proactive campaign in neighborhoods previously impacted by residential fires, targeting areas such as Pot Nets Creekside (Pinebark Cove area), School Lane area and Sherwood Forest. Firefighters went door-to-door to distribute free smoke detectors and provide safety guidance.
Smoke Detector Installation: As part of their initiative, the department ensured that residential structures had working smoke detectors, reinforcing home fire safety and helping to reduce false automatic fire alarm activations, which accounted for 40% of their emergency responses during Calendar Years 2024/2025.
This fire company campaign strategy aligns with widely accepted CRR principles for volunteer departments:
-
Identify Local Risks: Assess hazards such as fire-prone areas and vulnerable populations.
-
Program Planning & Strategy: Develop focused, measurable, and outcome-based programs tailored to community needs.
-
Community Partnership: Engage residents, local organizations, and stakeholders to participate and support safety initiatives.
-
Resource Allocation: Assign responsibilities and allocate equipment, personnel, and budget strategically to maximize impact.
-
Evaluation & Monitoring: Track the effectiveness of initiatives by collecting data and feedback to continuously improve the CRR program
Benefits of Implementing CRR:
-
Reduces fire incidents and property damage.
-
Enhances community awareness and preparedness.
-
Improves firefighter safety by anticipating high-risk situations.
-
Encourages volunteer involvement and strengthens local partnerships.
Indian River Volunteer Fire Company’s CRR canvas not only addresses immediate fire risks but also fosters long-term community resilience, leveraging education, outreach, and strategic program planning to make Long Neck and surrounding Sussex County neighborhoods safer.
In total, this cohort reached 50 homes within the targeted area, distributed seven smoke alarms as well as distribution fire helmets and coloring books for the younger population.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hereby acknowledges the community support and thanks the volunteers for their dedication to coordinate such a campaign.
