FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet

We’re excited to introduce a brand-new weekly feature where we highlight the dedicated volunteers of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

Each Friday (when we can), we’ll be sharing the stories of the men and women behind the gear; their backgrounds, their “why,” and what it truly means to serve this community. These are your neighbors, your friends, and your first responders.

We’re proud to kick off our very first feature with a true pillar of Station 80:

  • ??‍?? Steve Hawkins – Safety Officer

  • ?? Originally from Lewisberry, PA

  • ? 36 years of service with Station 80

?? Why you joined the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company?

“In my small town, it was the Grange, the Church, or the Fire Company for social activities… they didn’t play poker at the first two.”

?? What keeps you going:

“The satisfaction of making a difference and serving my community.”

?? What people may not realize:

“It’s harder than it looks—constant training and fundraising.”

?? Outside the firehouse:

Steve is an electrician who enjoys drag racing, fishing, and spending time raising his great-grandchildren.

?? Fun Facts:

• First job: Lot boy at a Chevrolet dealership

• Favorite show: America’s Funniest Videos

• Go-to snack: Leftover fundraiser cakes

• Music: Classic country (George Jones, David Allan Coe)

?? A life of service:

With decades of dedication, Steve has served in numerous leadership roles including Chief, Deputy Chief, and now Safety Officer. His commitment to the fire service has earned him multiple honors, including induction into both the Del-Mar-Va and Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association Halls of Fame.

?? Why volunteer?

“The personal rewards of helping your neighbors, especially in their darkest hour.”

?? In his words:

“It’s been my life since 1966—and I’m proud of it.”

?? Thank you, Steve, for your decades of dedication, leadership, and service to our community
