Nature:  Internal Fire Police Inservice Training

The Delaware State Fire Police assigned to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company are undergoing inhouse training curricula to enhance their focus on traffic incident management, scene safety and legal authority at emergency scenes, typically including fire police orientation, traffic control practices, and including but not limited to National Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) training.

The objective of the Core Curriculum Components (common requirements) were:

  • Fire Police Orientation: Understanding roles, responsibilities, and legal authority.

  • Traffic Incident Management: Safe positioning, scene control, and signaling techniques (TIMS).

  • Safe Fire Service Control Practices: Procedures for securing scenes and directing traffic around emergency vehicles.

  • Hazardous Materials Awareness: Identifying dangers and safety procedures.

  • First Aid/CPR Basics: Basic life support skills.

The curriculum included common training modules and concepts which included:

  • Orientation and Responsibilities: Understanding the scope of authority, interaction with law enforcement, and legal liability.

  • Traffic Control Operations: Lane closures, flagging, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • Scene Safety and Management: Techniques to protect fire apparatus, firefighters, and the public.

These in-service trainings are designed to ensure consistent and safe operations during emergencies.
