Nature: Washdown (Fuel Spill)
Location: Long Neck UMC (80)
32051 Long Neck Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
On Monday morning, October 27th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a washdown assignment at the Long Neck Methodist Church on Long Neck Road. It was reported to be fuel (gasoline) leaking from an older model sedan in the church parking lot.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Squad 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included incident evaluation, fluid recovery if needed, and overall incident mitigation.
It appears that an older Buick sedan was leaking gasoline the evening before. The vehicle was relocated from near the church building to the rear of the parking lot. The fire company was notified approximately 14 hours later with all of the fuel leakage being evaporated and dry. The vehicle was stabilized.
The Delaware State Fire Police did assist with traffic control during the incident.
What to do in case of a leaking fuel tank…
If your vehicle has a leaking fuel tank, do not start the car and move it to a safe, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Then, call a tow truck or roadside assistance to get the vehicle to a professional mechanic for a safe and permanent repair.
Immediate actions to take:
-
Safety first: Ensure everyone stays a safe distance away from the vehicle. Avoid any potential ignition sources like smoking, open flames, or even using a cell phone near the leak.
-
Do not start the car: Driving a vehicle with a fuel leak is extremely dangerous due to the high risk of fire.
-
Move to a safe area (if possible): If the leak is minor and you can do so safely, slowly maneuver the car to a well-ventilated area. Otherwise, wait for a tow truck.
-
Collect or reclaim the fuel: Place a drain pan under the leak to catch the dripping fuel and prevent it from spreading.
