Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.  It is great exercise!

A 5k walk or run is great exercise, providing significant cardiovascular benefits for heart and lung health, weight management, bone strengthening, and mood improvement. While running burns more calories in a shorter time and boosts aerobic fitness more, walking is a lower-impact, sustainable activity with fewer risks of injury. The best choice depends on your personal health goals, physical condition, and preferences.

Benefits of a 5k Walk or Run

  • Improved Heart Health:

Both walking and running can lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

  • Weight Management:

Regular physical activity helps in managing weight, which in turn reduces stress on the joints and bones.

  • Bone Strengthening:

Weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and can reduce the risk of conditions like osteoporosis.

  • Mood Enhancement:

Exercise helps to boost mood, ease stress, and increase confidence.

  • Mental Benefits:

Both walking and running can improve memory, thinking ability, and reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Walking vs. Running a 5k

  1. Running:

  • Benefits: Burns more calories in a shorter amount of time and is more effective at increasing VO2 max (a measure of cardiovascular fitness).

  • Risks: Higher risk of high-impact injuries such as runner's knee and shin splints due to greater ground reaction forces on joints.

  1. Walking:

  • Benefits: Lower-impact, which is safer for joints and has a lower risk of injury. A brisk 5k walk is sustainable for long-term fitness.

  • Considerations: Takes more time to burn the same amount of calories as running a 5k.
