Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment
Location: Wawa (80)
Address: 24930 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966
Early Wednesday, December 25th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of the Wawa for a vehicle accident. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. Shortly thereafter, the incident was upgraded to included entrapment with additional resources being allocated from the Lewes (82) Fire Department and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit. It was reported to be a two vehicle collision with an occupant entrapped in the back seat of one vehicle.
Emergency response units from Indian River included the Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, fluid and debris recovery, patient stabilization where needed, traffic control and overall included mitigation efforts.
Initially arriving emergency response units identified that there was not any occupant entrapment which allowed for the cancellation of the additional response resources. It appears that a motorhome pulling a utility trailer with golf cart was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and a grey Toyota RAV4 was traveling eastbound when the vehicles collided causing damage to both vehicles as well as an extended debris field.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with the closure of John J. Williams Highway as well as any access lane from Taormina Square onto Route #24 for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
