Nature: Structure Fire

Location: 28110 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday afternoon, May 18th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), Georgetown (77), Dagsboro (73), and Lewes (82) fire departments were alerted for a structure on John J. Williams Highway between Bulls Eye Lane and Warwick Road.  It was reported to be a garage type structure fully involved with exposures to other buildings as well as live overhead utility lines down.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-1, #80-3 and Incident Command 80 from the Long Neck area as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Additional emergency response units included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Delaware State Fire Marshall and the Delaware State Police.  Other mutual aid companies were utilized for standby cover up assignments which included Rehoboth Beach (86) and Laurel (81) fire companies.

Emergency response units were requested to deploy fire suppression lines including a 2½” line for the bulk of the suppression activities.  Other crews utilized fire suppression lines for interior attacks as well as the Millsboro aerial unit being deployed.  Other specific assignments establishment of water supply and water shuttle from nearby hydrants, closure of John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident, notification of the utility service provider because of live electrical lines being downed in the immediate area of the fire ground operations, as well as request for additional manpower.

It appears that a Delaware State Trooper on patrol responded to the area to investigate the smoke and found the structure fully involved and notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center requesting the fire department.

The utility service provider responded to disconnect the utility service from the nearby utility pole.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
