Nature: Outside Fire

Location: 25723 Independence Dr., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Saturday evening, May 15th, the Indian River (80) and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire departments were alerted for an outside fire – originally a control burn that has gotten away from the property residents on Independence Drive in the Holiday Pines development.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  The incident was downgraded to just Indian River units cancelling Millsboro units while traveling to the incident location.

Emergency response crew assignments included an evaluation and identification of burn ingredients, advise the property residence of the proper burn procedures, fire suppression, and notification of DNREC.

It was reported that this a control burn that got out of hand.  It was identified that the components of this incidents involved construction materials, household materials – i.e., chairs, mattress, and other furniture and household items.  The occupants were operating a burn barrel in an inappropriate fashion as well.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control Officials were notified of the blatant violations of the burn regulations and they are investigating.

The residential occupants were apprised of the Delaware Burn Regulations and that they were not in adherence to any of these stipulations.  Burning trash or garbage, construction and other debris, old tires, grass clippings and leaves is illegal at all times in Delaware.
