Nature: Gas Leak Location: Oak Orchard Apartments

Address: 31546 Oak Orchard Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Tuesday, October 30th, as the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company continues with replenishment efforts from Hurricane Sandy, we were alerted for a gas leak at the Oak Orchard apartments. It was reported to have 500 lb. underground propane that was 70% full and suffered a leaking condition on the neck of the stem under the regulator that was actively ventilating.

Emergency response apparatus included: Engine #80-1, Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-3 and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility. Engine #80-1 evaluated the incident, implemented an attack line to disperse the propane vapors, and notified the utility provider.

Upon arrival of Engine #80-3, an effort to implement a master stream scenario was coordinated. The utility provider coordinated an unsuccessful effort stop the active leak and then made arrangements to pump the propane from the underground tank and then pursue replacement initiatives.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the traffic control measures for the duration of the incident.
