Nature: Grass / Brush Fire
Location: Herring Creek Estates (80)
Address: John J Williams Hwy and Mariners Way Millsboro, DE 19966
On Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a grass / brush fire along John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Herring Creek Estates. Originally, the incident was dispatched to be in the vicinity of Baywood Greens. It was reported to a grass fire on the side of road near brush and trees.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Deputy 80 and Brush 80-0 from the Long Neck facility and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression measures to suppress the spread of the fire, then saturation measures included rakes, shovels, and axes to fully suppression the fire.
It appears the vegetation fire was the result of an electrical spark from the nearby overhead utility and electrical services. The fire was fully suppressed before advancing into the nearby marshy area alongside John J. Williams Highway.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with the detour or intermittent closure of John J. Williams Highway for duration of the incident.
