Nature: Structure Fire
Location: 27728 Sandy Dr Oak Orchard West, DE 19966
On Thursday, December 26th, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a residential structure on Sandy Drive in the River Winds development off Oak Orchard Road. (This development was formerly known as Oak Orchard West.) Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. The Milton Fire Department responded with mutual consent to the incident as dispatched. It was reported via a relative that the house was catching on fire.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Indian River’s Chief responded directly to the incident location and advised that the incident was a large brush fire and downgraded the incident response to the Indian River and Millsboro apparatus.
Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression activities with 1¾” attack lines and mitigation of exposure concerns.
It appears that a brush fire was the result of burning activity at the residential location which quickly spread to neighboring yards and farmer’s field. Neighboring residential properties were of concern with the advancing brush fire.
The Delaware State Fire Police assisted with scene access for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified of the incident.
