Nature: Structure Fire
Location: 28253 Basin Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
Early Sunday morning, April 21st, the Millsboro (83), Lewes (82) and Dagsboro (73) fire companies were alerted to assist the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company with a working residential structure fire originally reported at the rear of a residential structure off Russell Avenue. Initial reports indicated that the house was fully involved. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 and Tower 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine#80-3 and Incident Command 80 from the Long Neck area as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. The Milton (85) Fire Department and other mutual aid companies were utilized for cover up assignments.
Emergency response crew assignments included an immediate initial 360• exterior evaluation locating utilities, no basement, fire conditions and conflicting reports of occupant(s) trapped, an initial fire suppression attack line was advanced to commence with knocking down the fire and initiating a primary search of the residential structure knowing the fire had advanced to the attic and roof of the structure. Other responding crews were advised to utilize Basin Road for the residential structure address with structural evacuation commands and tones being tendered as well. Additional fire suppression attack lines were initiated as well as water supply and water shuttle efforts being coordinated for both access points -- Russell Ave and Basin Road.
Upon arrival of first responding apparatus, it was identified as a two-story residential with the back side of the structure fully involved with fire advancing to the eaves, attic and roof line. These fire conditions caused an evacuation of the structure while performing the primary search of the residential structure. Additional efforts for exterior fire suppression yielded additional attempts to finalize the primary and secondary search efforts on both levels of the residential structure with no occupants trapped inside the structure. Other interior efforts yielded to permit an elevated master stream operation to commence. The incident was placed under control with extensive overhaul efforts pursuing.
There was one firefighter injury that required additional emergency medical observations. There were no civilian injuries.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic and scene access activities for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
The American Red Cross was notified because the incident displaced two adults, three children, and four dogs
