Nature: Structure Fire

Location: 35403 Sussex Lane Millsboro, DE 19966

On Wednesday morning, September 21st, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), and Millsboro (83) fire departments were alerted for a structure fire on Sussex Lane in the Mariner’s Cove sub-division off of Long Neck Road. It was reported to be extremely heavy smoke in the area.  The Rehoboth Beach (86) fire company provided a stand-by cover up assignment at our Long Neck facility.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engines #80-3 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional resources were provided from the Sussex County Paramedics, the local emergency services provider, and the Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office.

Emergency response crew assignments included an initial incident synopsis and size up; request to establish water supply; initiate an immediate fire suppression attack, initiate ventilation; and coordinate the overall incident mitigation with establishment of a manpower pool. Engine #80-3 coordinated the initiate fire suppression assignment, Tanker 80 coordinated the water supply by laying a large diameter hose (5” LDH) from the nearest hydrant, Engine #80-1 was assignment the hydrant operations and Rescue 80 coordinated breathing apparatus replenishment. Millsboro and Lewes were assigned to the manpower pool and to assist with fire suppression, ventilation, mitigation, and overhaul.

It appears that a single wide residential manufactured home with additions was involved with an interior fire that had not fully vented at the time of the initial reporting. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire and the tenants did respond to the incident location.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating.
