Nature: Firefighter Training – Marine Unit - Injured Mariner Assistance

Location: Massey’s Landing

On Wednesday evening, August 26th, the Indian River (80) and Millsboro (83) fire companies conducted a joint training exercise on the water and in the Massey Landing area. The agencies Water Rescue Personnel developed various training objectives to enhance awareness and familiarize other personnel with the following marine unit operations:

• Explanation and awareness of tidal conditions and how it may impact recovery of injuries mariners;

• Launching and docking marine units in anticipation of transporting personnel for recovery of injured mariners;

• Recovering injured mariners while in full water submersible gear in high tide areas as well as low tide areas;

• Recovering injured mariners while addressing basic emergency medical care and back boarding priorities while within the water;

• Recovery or salvaging debris within the waterway;

• Securing, tethering, and monitoring emergency responders while performing in-the-water rescue duties and responsibilities.

• Transporting injured personnel to marina facilities; and

• General mariner highlights and hints.

The event hosted vessel trailing; staging of all emergency response apparatus; vessel launching, docking, and general operations of marine units; medical equipment familiarization and purposes while interacting with mariners in the water. Mannequins were utilized as injured mariners; however, all other props utilized were actual equipment.  This interagency collaboration enhanced agency affiliations with functional capabilities and competencies being demonstrated.

The event was held at the Massey’s Landing Public Boat in Long Neck.

Illustrated herewith are various photographs taken during the exercises as well as previous training exercises in July 2015 are illustrated.
