Nature: Vehicle Accident

Location: In Front of Giant Foods

Address:  John J Williams Hwy., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Monday morning, August 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Giant Foods. It was reported to be a single vehicle into a pole with potential electric wires down.

Emergency response units from Indian River include Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility, Rescue 80 and Incident Command 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assist with patient stabilization if needed, traffic control, and overall scene mitigation. The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close John J. Williams Highway between Long Neck Road and Bay Farm Road for the duration of the incident.

It appears that a gold 4 door sedan was traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway and left the roadway for an unknown reason striking a utility pole continuing westbound through mailbox posts and into a hedge row of bushes. The utility pole was severed causing an electrical hazard for John J. Williams Highway traffic patterns. An adult occupant with two children left the scene of the vehicle accident and was later tracked to a nearby residential location on John J. Williams Highway.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the traffic lane patterns and lane closures for the duration of the incident. The Delaware Department of Transportation was notified to offer long term assistance.

The utility provider was required to respond and prepare for the pole replacement efforts.

The Delaware State Police is investigating.
