Did You Know?

Indian River's Annual Fund Drive is in full swing, and we’re asking our community to stand with us. Every donation — big or small — helps our volunteers stay trained, equipped, and ready to respond when you need us most.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company is a 100% volunteer fire and rescue organization serving the Oak Orchard–Long Neck area and all surrounding communities in southeastern Sussex County, Delaware.

Core Facts:

  • The department provides volunteer fire and rescue services to Oak Orchard, Long Neck, and nearby jurisdictions.

  • It operates two stations — Oak Orchard Road and Banks Road — covering roughly 80 square miles of fire district.

  • IRVFC has served the Long Neck area for over 73 years, maintaining a vital role in community safety.

  • The company responds to a wide range of emergencies including fire suppression, motor vehicle accidents, water & residential rescues, and automatic fire alarms.

  • It serves full-time residents, seasonal visitors, and rapidly growing residential communities, with call volume increasing significantly in recent years.

Why this matters:

  • No municipal (incorporated town) funding — the company relies heavily on community support and donations.

  • High demand for service — population growth and seasonal influx increase emergency call volume.

  • Comprehensive coverage — from structure fires to marine incidents, IRVFC protects a diverse and expanding region.

Your support keeps our community safe. Thank you for backing your local volunteers.
