FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY: The Heart Behind the Helmet Recognizes John W. Swithenbank, III

This week, we're honored to feature one of the pillars of Station 80 - a member whose decades of service have helped shape the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company into what it is today.

Life Member Chester Goudy, whose dedication to the fire company inspired John to begin his own journey of service.

?? Most memorable call:

One incident that has stayed with John throughout the years was responding to a serious motorcycle accident near Winding Creek involving the son of another Life Member of the fire company. Calls like these are reminders that emergencies often involve people we know and care about, making the responsibility of serving our community even more personal.

?? Outside the firehouse:

John works as a Security Officer.

?? Off-duty:

He enjoys walking local trails and, perhaps most of all, spending time around Station 2 with the guys.

Over the past 58 years, John has served the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in countless ways. Throughout his tenure, he has held the positions of 2nd Assistant Chief, President, Vice President, Assistant Treasurer, and Fire Recorder, always answering the call wherever he was needed. In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, he was awarded Life Membership and holds the distinguished title of President Emeritus - an honor bestowed upon only two members in the history of our department.

John's legacy is measured not only by the positions he has held, but by the generations of firefighters he has mentored, the traditions he has helped preserve, and the countless hours he has dedicated to serving the Oak Orchard and Long Neck communities. Members like John remind us that the strength of Station 80 is built one volunteer, one call, and one generation at a time.
