Nature: Small Outside Fire
Location: Building 300
Address: 25877 River Bend Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
Cross Streets: Shore Plaza Blvd/Shore Plaza Blvd
On Saturday afternoon, May 30th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an outside fire on River Bend Drive in the Long Neck Apartments. It was reported to a fire in and under the flower bed at Building 300.
Emergency response units from Indian River were Chief 80-15 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility.
Emergency response crew assignments included suppression and saturation of the flower beds.
It appears that the mulch in and around the flower beds near Building 300 caught fire and needed suppression and saturation to prevent further fire spread. The area was raked and inundated with water.
Organic mulches (wood, pine needles, shredded rubber) are combustible and easily ignited by careless actions like discarded cigarettes, and they can also spontaneously combust under the right conditions of heat, dryness, and piling.
After assignment completions all fire company personnel and emergency response apparatus were authorized to return to their respective quarters.
