On Wednesday evening, December 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a washdown assignment on John J. Williams Highway at the Royal Farms Store. It was reported to be gasoline leak of fuel spill at pump #15.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Incident Command 80.
Emergency response crew assignments included an immediate evaluation and identified that the substance was not fuel but possibly antifreeze and all other emergency response apparatus was held at their respective stations.
Incident information was obtained with corrective action advise being provided to the store employees and the incident was closed for further action.
Proper preparation and vigilance are key to preventing and safely responding to fuel spills at gas pumps, protecting people, property, and the environment.
Follow the "4 Cs" Approach – When a fuel spill occurs, you should promptly:
-
Control the source (e.g., stop the pump or use emergency shut-off).
-
Contain the spill using PPE, cones or tape, and absorbents to prevent spread into drains or landscaping.
-
Clean Up spills with absorbents and dispose properly per local regulations.
-
Communicate by documenting the incident and notifying supervisors, customers, and regulatory agencies if required
