Nature: Water Rescue Priority 1

Location: 100 yards off of Pot Nets Seaside

Between Pot Nets Seaside and Power Plant

On Sunday, July 6th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83) and Dagsboro (73) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a water rescue priority 1 incident with a reported sinking vessel approximately 100 yards off of Pot Nets Seaside.  Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2, the DNREC Marine Police and the United States Coast Guard – Indian River Squadron.  It was reported to be a 24’ Wellcraft vessel, white in color, that was sinking off the Pot Nets Seaside area.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility, Brush 80 with 80 Marine 2 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Indian River units launched from the Massey’s Landing Public Boat Ramp.  The Millsboro Marine units were designated to launch from the Gull Point (Rosedale Beach) Public Ramp and the Dagsboro Marine units were designated to launch from the Vines Creek Marina area.

Emergency response crew assignments were to launch and navigate to the designated coordinates off Pot Nets Seaside.

It appears that the Wellcraft vessel was partially submerged and nearby mariners were assisting the vessel in distress.  It was reported that all subjects were on the shoreline with the vessel partially submerged with the situation under control.  Many of the emergency vessels that were underway were cancelled and the incident was being coordinated by the DNREC Marine Police.  The services of the aviation units were not needed as well.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the closure of the respective public ramps to allow for the launching and return of the emergency response vessels.

All emergency response units were authorized to return to their respective quarters.
