Nature: Automatic Crash Notification – Vehicle Accident

Location: John J Williams Hwy and Mount Joy Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Wednesday, June 11th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad were alerted for an automatic crash notification on John J. Williams Highway at or near the Mount Joy Road intersection.

Automatic Crash Notification Technology is within vehicles and cell phones which utilizes built-in sensors to identify impact either from vehicle collisions and/or fallen or dropped devices that can be immediately connected to offer help.  In many cases, emergency call back (9-1-1) centers attempt to make contact via phone to verify your location and the extent of concern. If there are no responses, negative responses or answers emergency first responders are dispatched to the GPS location of the incident.

Emergency response units were able to identify a two vehicle accident at the intersections and notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center accordingly. The emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80-1 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crew assignments included initial patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization, fluid and debris recovery and traffic control.

It appears that a white Ford pick up was struck from behind by a dark colored Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV causing front end damage and fluid leakage.  Once the fluid and debris clean-up was completed all vehicles were relocated to the Royal Farms parking lot pending arrival of the Delaware State Police.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
