  • Grilling, Bonfire or Fire Pit Safety Message

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company offers this safety message.

As temperatures rise and outdoor activities heat up, so does the risk of fire. Whether you're grilling in the backyard, enjoying a bonfire, or cleaning up the property, it's important to be mindful of fire dangers—especially during hot, dry conditions.

Here are a few summer safety reminders:

? Never leave your grill or fire pit unattended

? Keep a water source nearby when burning outdoors

? Don’t burn on windy or high-risk days

? Dispose of smoking materials safely

? Make sure your fire alarms are working properly

Check with the local authorities or State Fire Marshall to make sure there are no fire bans or burn bans in place.

  • Check Wind Conditions: Always assess the wind before starting a fire to prevent sparks from spreading.

  • Build the Fire in an Open Spot: Ensure the fire pit is placed away from flammable materials and structures.

  • Use Proper Materials: Never use construction lumber or treated wood, as they can release toxic chemicals.

  • Have an Extinguishing Plan: Always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby to put out the fire if necessary.

  • Never Leave a Fire Unattended: Always supervise the fire and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving.

  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep the fire pit at least 10-20 feet away from your home and other structures.

  • Use a Fire Pit Screen: Consider using a screen to contain sparks and embers.

Following these rules will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience with your barbecue and outdoor fire pit.
