Nature: 2025 Sussex County Phoenix Awards Ceremony

City: Delaware Technical & Community College – Owens Campus

On Friday evening, April 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was invited to attend the Sussex County Phoenix Awards Ceremony to highlight volunteers who were recognized with Phoenix Awards presentations for 2024 CPR Saves.

The Phoenix Award ceremony is held annually to bring together cardiac arrest survivors and the first responders who played a part in the successful release from the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest event.

In 2024 there were 36 Pre-hospital CPR saves in Sussex County! The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company first responder crews participated in 1 of those successful cases with following crew members along with the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad crew, the Sussex County Paramedics, and the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center dispatchers:

  • Chief Steven C. Deery, Jr.

  • Assistant Chief Richard Zwiebel

  • Firefighter John Baine

  • Firefighter Ala Crossan

  • Firefighter James McLane

  • Firefighter Jacob Klingler

  • President Patrick Miller

We would also like to recognize Firefighter Chase Holden who received a Phoenix Award recognition for a CPR Save at another occurrence in Sussex County.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company wishes to acknowledge and thank our First Responders for their efforts during those crucial minutes by providing many hands-on tasks that aid in the positive outsides of the patients in our community!

We are extremely proud of our volunteers at Indian River for providing exemplary TEAM work in our community!
