Nature: Brush / Woods Fire
Location: Inland Bays Wastewater Plant (80)
Address: 29445 Inland Bay Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
On Monday, March 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a brush / woods fire on the property of the Inland Bays Wastewater Treatment Plant off Cannon Road. It was reported to be a brush / woods fire approximately 3 acres off the power lines in the wooded area.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Brush 80-0 and Engine 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. The Millsboro (83) Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for assistance with two engines and a brush truck.
Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression and saturation tactics with the assistance of rakes and axes to address the smoldering brush and decaying fallen trees. Additional assistance from the Sussex County Inland Bay Staff with a backhoe and skid steering provided needed access to the impacted areas as well as making fire breaks.
It appears that approximately 3 acres or more of brush and wood caught fire and largely burned unnoticed before detection was reported. Much of the impacted area was self- contained and needed saturation and overhaul.
All units were permitted to return to their respective quarters after suppression activities were completed.
