Nature: Structure Fire

Location: 28946 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

On Wednesday afternoon, March 5th, while Indian River was mitigating an electrical hazard incident on John J. Williams Highway a passing motorist stop and notified fire police personnel that there was a residential structure fire just down the road.  Utility 80-11 was directed to investigate and notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center or a residential structure fire 28946 John J. Williams Highway which was being dispatched at the time.

Emergency response units from Indian River responded to assist the Millsboro (83) Fire Company with this incident.  These included Tanker 80, Tower 80 and Utility 80-11 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines 80, 80-1 and Brush 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Other additional emergency alerts included the Millsboro (83) and Dagsboro (73) fire companies and the Sussex County Paramedics.

Emergency response units were assigned to coordinate fire suppression strategies to the interior and rear of the structure, ladder truck placement for access to the roof of the structure as well as hand ladders, water supply operations and other suppression activities. The incident was coordinated by Millsboro Fire Chief Dennis Swain.

It appears that a fire originated near the rear of the residential structure up near the eaves and roof line causing damage to the residence.  The residence appeared to be unoccupied at the time of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident and the previous electrical hazard incident.  A detour was coordinated between William Street Road and Maryland Camp Road.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
