Nature: Automatic Crash Notification - Vehicle Accident with Entrapment
Location: Waterfront Dr and Indian Mission Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
On Monday, March 3rd, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82) and Milton (85) fire companies were dispatched to a vehicle with entrapment on Indian Mission Road at Waterfront Drive at the entrance to Stonewater Creek. Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2.
Initially, this incident was an automatic crash notifcation via iphone immediately before EMS units came upon the incident while returning from nearby medical facilities. It was reported to be a two-vehicle collision with heavy entrapment in one vehicle with possibility of three occupants needing EMS services.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine 80, Engine 80-1 and Brush 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Lewes responded with two units: 82-2 and 82-3 and Milton responded with Rescue 85.
Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization, vehicle extrication measures, traffic control, fluid and debris recovery as well as establishing a landing zone for aviation on Indian Mission Road. Additional resources from DELDOT was required to the incident location as well as the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
It appears that a Chevrolet Tahoe and a GMC Terrain collided on Indian Mission Road causing significant injuries to the vehicle occupants and rendering both vehicles inoperable. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit transported one occupant to the Christiana Hospital in New Castle County.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with the closure and detour of Indian Mission Road, Cannon Road and Waterfront Road in the affected areas.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
