Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

On Monday evening, February 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and Mid Sussex Rescue Squad were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on Indian Mission Road and Cannon Road.  It was reported to be a vehicle into a utility pole, utility pole severed in two and in the roadway, other traveling motorist hit the downed utility pole. The Lewes Fire Department was alerted to assist with the entrapment dispatch as was the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines 80 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization, traffic control, fluid and debris recovery, notification of utility service provider for utility pole replacement and electric service restoration, notification of DELDOT for arrow-boards, and other mitigation efforts. There were no occupant entrapment upon arrival of first responders.

It appears that a gray Honda Accord struck and severed a utility pole at or near the intersection of Indian Mission Road and Cannon Road.  The utility pole broke and fell onto Indian Mission Road causing a traffic hazard.  This incident caused an electrical service outage in the area which impacted approximately 2,800 residents in the area.  Nearby traffic lights on John J. Williams Highway and Indian Mission Road, Long Neck Road and Banks Road, John J. Williams Highway and Bay Farm Road were inoperable resulting from the accident.  There was no occupant entrapment with the vehicle accident.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated complete traffic pattern closures at the accident scene waiting for DELDOT response with additional traffic control devices.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
