Nature: Brush Fire

Location: 24889 Cannon Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Monday afternoon, December 2nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a brush fire incident with exposure concerns. It was reported that a property occupant was burning in a burn barrel which got out of control based upon the dry and windy conditions and spreading to adjoining wooded area.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 and Brush 80 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Additional resources were requested from the Lewes (82) Fire Department before being cancelled while responding.

Emergency response crews were assigned to suppress the fire from advancing further into the woods as well as exposure protection with the nearby pole barns, RV camper, sheds, et. al.  Brush 80 was able to utilize their ground sweeps to fully suppress and wet down the impacted grassy area.

It appears that the residential occupant was burning in a burn barrel which spread to nearby grass and was pushed by the winds to neighboring parcels and adjoining wood areas.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall was notified and responded to the location.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic and assisted with fire suppression where needed.
