Nature: Elevator/Escalator Rescue

Location: 34010 Harvard Ave., Carillon Woods, DE 19966

On Tuesday evening, September 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an elevator rescue incident on Harvard Avenue in the Carillon Woods complex off Indian Mission Road.  It was reported to be a single occupant stuck in the elevator between floors.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Utility units 80-9 and 80-11 from the Oak Orchard facility and Tower 80 from a previous incident in the Long Neck area.

Emergency response crew assignments included incident evaluation and assistance with extrication.  The process included securing the power to the elevator, securing the elevator, gaining access to the elevator shaft and lowering the elevator car with constant communication with the occupant.  The complex maintenance personnel and elevator repair were unavailable and requested to respond to the incident location.

The occupant was able to exit the elevator once it returned to the ground level.  The elevator was placed out of service pending notification of the elevator service personnel. Additional operational concerns were communicated to the emergency operations center that multiple persons with disabilities resided on upper floors and relied on the elevator operations.

There were no injuries associated with the incident.
