Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment
Location: Bay Farm Rd and John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966
On Saturday evening, August 17th, the Indian River (80) and Lewes (82) fire departments were alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on John J. Williams Hwy. at the Bay Farm Road intersection. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. It was originally reported as a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision and unknown injuries with one vehicle smoking.
Emergency response units from Indian River include Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-1 and Command 80 from the Long Neck area as well as Deputy 80 responding from the area. Deputy 80 arrived on-scene and confirmed a two-vehicle collision with occupant entrapment in one vehicle resulting in the incident being upgraded to include the Lewes Fire Department with a rescue unit assist.
Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization, preparation for extrication measures with the minivan type vehicle, fluid and debris recovery, traffic control with complete closure of the entire intersection, and overall incident mitigation activities.
It appears that a blue Chevrolet Silverado and a Dodge Caravan collided at or near the intersection causing extensive damage to both vehicles as well as entrapping the occupant of the minivan. Extrication measures were pursued via Rescue 80 with assistance from Engine #80-1 crews as well as Lewes as needed. One person was transported to nearby medical facilities for additional medical attention.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the complete closure of John J. Williams Highway for both east and westbound traffic patterns. The ancillary roads for Bay Farm Road and Autumn Road were also impacted at the intersections.
Additional resources from DELDOT were requested to ameliorate the traffic lights and pedestrian crosswalk signage that was damaged as a result of the accident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
